ALMATTI DAM, IN KARNATAKA

TREATMENT OF THE UNCONFORMITY ZONE AND THE PROVISION OF GROUT CURTAINS AND DRAINAGE HOLES THROUGH THE GALLERY OF ALMATTI DAM

Client: Chief Engineer, Almatti dam, K.B.J.N.L. Govt of Karnataka, Bangalore

Location: Almatti Dam 70 Km from Bijapur Town, in Karnataka

The work was executed under trying and severe artisan conditions, due to the poor geology of the dam foundation.

Besides dealing with curtain grouting through the drainage gallery from Block No. 1 to 52 of Almatti Dam, one of the main objectives of this challenging project was to treat the weak zone (unconformity zone), having a thickness of 6 m that existed in the foundation from Block No. 45 to 52, between the joint of base granite rocks and the overlying quartzitic formations.

80% of the work was executed through the drainage gallery of size 1.5 x 2.25 m in a period of 12 months. This challenging job was executed by employing 20 rotary drilling rigs, 8 roto percussive rigs, 6 air compressors of 450 cfm, and 8 grout pumps with supporting machinery and accessories.

A technical team of 8 qualified engineers, 8 foremen, 220 drillers, operators, skilled workers and supporting staff worked round the clock in 3 shifts for 12 months.
